In order to learn about this landmark, we must first look back at the beginning of Kehilath Anshe Ma’ariv (K.A.M.). Founded in 1847, Congregation of the Men of the West K.A.M. Isaiah Israel is the oldest Jewish Congregation in Chicago.
Chicago Bee: Cornerstone of the Black Metropolis

At State and 36th on the South Side is an Art Deco structure that stands as a beautiful icon of Bronzeville and Chicago’s Black Metropolis. Now a public library and reading room, it was built by entrepreneur Anthony Overton to house the Chicago Bee.

After seeing some of the city’s most beautiful greystone houses and learning about medical pioneer Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, we’ve saved the best for last in our three part series: The Forum. Mostly vacant for decades and facing demolition, its fate changed in the Fall of 2011 when the building was rescued by Urban Juncture.
The first signs of life in this historic 19th century building will be a cafe and art gallery next year. Later, the ballroom will come back to life as a live music performance venue.
