In my travels as a Chicago photographer, I love discovering the unique and sometimes quirky businesses that lend character to our city’s neighborhoods. I thought it would be fun to focus specifically on one type of business, and each week feature an example from a different neighborhood. After some consideration, I decided on an exploration of our city’s barber shops and the people who work there.

This Victorian-style greystone consists of units that are 3 stories each with full basements. Its construction coincides with the establishment of the Sacramento station (closed and demolished in 1949) on the Lake Street elevated rail in early 1894.

Some of the city’s most beautiful neighborhood commercial buildings are on Lawrence Avenue in Albany Park. Diverse, charming, and beautiful, these structures nicely represent the community they’re a part of.
The corner buildings featured in this walking tour were constructed during Albany Park’s meteoric rise in the early 20th century, from 1907 to 1930.

The handsome architecture of the Saint Ignatius College Prep campus has always intrigued me. Located at 1076 West Roosevelt Road in West Town, the private Jesuit high school sits next to the equally impressive and historic Holy Family Catholic Church that catches the eye from many blocks away.
